Research Methods Course Projects

Research Methods Course Outcomes

Research Methods is a required, year-long course for second-year undergraduate students in the Department. The course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental logic of sociological research, as well as commonly used research methods. Through hands-on practice, students begin to build foundational research skills. Centered on a learning-by-doing approach, the course emphasizes active participation, allowing students to engage directly in the process through which sociological knowledge is produced.

The course is structured across two semesters. In the first semester, the focus is on qualitative research methods. Students work in groups to develop research topics of interest and are introduced to key qualitative approaches, including interviews, fieldwork, and textual analysis.

In the second semester, the focus shifts to quantitative research methods. Students are introduced to the logic of quantitative research design and the processes of data analysis. The course guides them through questionnaire design, sampling techniques, and survey implementation, followed by statistical analysis of collected data. Through this process, students learn how different statistical methods can be applied to address specific research questions.

Overall, by integrating both qualitative and quantitative approaches, the course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the diversity and complementarity of sociological research methods. It also supports students in identifying and developing their own research interests.
