The purpose of this study is to explore the adversity experiences and the process of joining a gang experienced by a juvenile gang member throughout his life course. The study aims to understand the impact of childhood adversity on adolescent development and how gang involvement influences an individual’s life trajectory. By examining the psychological journey and personal experiences of an actual gang member during his growth, the study seeks to encourage public reflection on how childhood adversity can affect and alter a child's developmental path, ultimately leading them to a life in gangs.

Previous research has shown a correlation between childhood adversity and juvenile delinquency. Adversities such as parental divorce, domestic violence, family illness, poverty, and lack of family affection are common childhood experiences that can impact a teenager’s self-esteem, emotional regulation, and interpersonal skills. These experiences can lead to mental health issues and behavioral problems. In particular, adolescents who lack family care and support may seek other forms of attachment and recognition, with joining a gang being one possible choice.
