This study explores the power structure in ghost stories from a sociological perspective, with particular attention to the importance of female characters. The study aims to clarify why female characters always leave a deep impression in ghost stories. We believe that ghost stories are not only literary works or folk tales, but also carry values and imagery related to the society. In order to achieve the research objective, this study adopts textual analysis as the main research method, taking female ghost stories as the research target, and analyzing their storylines and the cultural meanings embedded in them. The literature review covers four aspects: folk beliefs, social institutions and structures, Han culture and ghost story texts. The findings show that the ghost story texts are embedded with collective memory and gender power structure.
In the literature review, previous studies in different areas, such as folk beliefs, social institutions and structures, Han Chinese culture, and ghost story texts, are summarized. This approach provides an understanding of the background and cultural context of ghost stories and lays the foundation for the analysis of this study. In this study, the main research method is textual analysis, and the final result of the study reveals the existence of collective memory and gender power structure in the ghost story texts. Ghost stories, as a traditional form of cultural expression passed on by word of mouth, reflect the collective memory and values of the society. At the same time, the roles played by female characters in ghost stories are closely related to gender power structures, a phenomenon that reflects the distribution of gender roles and power relations in society.
The importance of this study is to reveal how ghost stories, as a cultural phenomenon, reflect the collective memory and gender power structure in society. Through a deeper understanding of the cultural meanings of ghost stories, we can better understand the spread of ghost stories and their impact on society. In addition, the study also contributes to our understanding of gender power structures and cultural inheritance.
