The main focus of this article is directed at discussing the determinants of

the gender-biased intergenerational inheritance practice in Taiwan. The author

uses "2001 Taiwanese Social Change Survey" to answer the following question:

Firstly, is son-preference still prevalent in inheritance practice nowadays in

Taiwan? Secondly, What factors would influence the gender preference of

inheritance practice apart from ethnicity? And thirdly, after controlling for

the impact of social structure status, does the ethnicity factor still

constitute a significant determinant? Using logistic regression, the thesis

finds suggests that gender-biased practices are still exist in Taiwan, and

there are three main factors behind the gender-biased practices: cohorts,

marital status, and social structural locations (including original family

residence, father’s education level, father’s working sector, father’s

occupation). The results generally indicate that the belief in importance of

the role played by ethnicity might be nothing more than a myth. There is a

possibility that ethnicity might be the result of social structure locations

of parents. Nevertheless, it does not imply that ethnicities will not play a

part in gender-biased inheritance practice at all, after controlling for the

social structure locations determinant. There are other ethnicity-related

factors (such as social network and family pressure) that may also affect

gender preference during the dividing of family assets.
