Emotional relationships in the workplace have always been a phenomenon that every worker will experience. Especially with the diversity of corporate organizations, work has become faster, complex, and cross-functional. Employees are not always in contact with colleagues and supervisors from the same department, but also interact with some members from different departments. Although previous researches have discussed the emotional relationships of members in other fields such as family and school, the relationship in workplace may be found to have the same positive emotional relationships as these fields.

In this study, 30 office workers from different industries were interviewed through semi-structured interviews of qualitative research to examine how homophily of professional competencies and network closure affect the emotional relationships of team members in cross-functional project team. The results of the study revealed when team members with homophily of professional competencies in cross-functional project team, they have positive emotional relationships, such as more harmonious communication, trust in their job performance, and support their professional opinions. And in the part of network closure, we also found when team members have close colleagues in common with themselves, they have positive emotional relationships of emotional social capital and that causes being willing to get to know each other to increase their familiarity, and willing to cooperate with each other on cross-functional project team, but more than half of the respondents said they would not trust in each other’s job performance based on network closure.
