Envy is a universal yet subtle emotion. In contrast to prior examinations of envy, which predominantly emanate from personality traits, internal motivations, external behavioral manifestations, and resultant consequences, this study addresses the overlooked social implications and the limitations of existing definitions and classifications of envy in capturing its multifaceted nature. Thus, this study adopts a dynamic perspective on social relationships, employing in-depth interviews and content analysis to gather diverse examples of envy within varying relational contexts. The aim is to unravel the evolution of envy within relationships, its consequential effects on relational dynamics, and, consequently, developed into the distinct envy forms.

The result of this study delves into the "course of envy." The framework of envy is contingent upon the individual's discernment of the desirable values, judgement of the desired, and the crosschecking with the group. The "course of envy" can be identified in three phases, each shaped by distinct factors and resulted in unique typologies of envy. The beginning is influenced by one's perspective; the progression is tied to the driven directions; the ending is contingent upon the alignment of crosschecking or the attainment of desirable values. Regardless of its envy path, all manifestations are interwoven with the societal "double-checking", ultimately reflecting the shifting in the dynamics of positioning and boundaries within their social relationships.

Furthermore, the "course of envy" underscores the inherent limitations of past approaches in identifying envy solely upon the possession or absence of desirable values. The result supports a comprehensive perspective in expanding our understanding towards the envy framework, including the exploration of envy within the context of value pursuit, analysis of the dynamic and multifaceted nature of value ownership, and a nuanced examination of interaction between those desire and the desired. Collectively, these insights contribute to a more profound comprehension of the complexity of envy within social relationships.
