Adolescent suicide-related mortality remains a prominent concern. Given the established link between suicidal ideation and subsequent behavior, it is imperative to examine the changes in suicidal ideation and its determinants. Despite the extant body of Western research, insufficient attention has been directed towards the phenomenon of suicidal ideation among Taiwanese youths. To address this scholarly gap, leveraging the longitudinal Taiwanese panel data from the Taiwan Youth Project (TYP) and drawing upon the life course perspective, this thesis investigates the trajectory of Taiwanese youths' suicidal ideation over a decade and explores the factors steering these changes. The findings reveal a decline in suicidal ideation among Taiwanese youths with advancing age. Furthermore, a positive correlation emerges between adverse life events experienced during adolescence and higher levels of suicidal thoughts. Importantly, the differing effects of distinct negative life events on suicidal ideation become evident. Conversely, adolescents having a satisfactory relationship with their parents and exhibiting elevated self-esteem demonstrate reduced susceptibility to harboring suicidal thoughts.
