Many previous studies have examined the differences in financial investment behaviors between genders. The majority of studies have shown that, compared to women, men usually purchase more financial products and allocate more money to financial investment. In addition, women are found to be more risk adverse than their male counterparts in their investment strategies. However, some other studies have revealed different observations, with women being more engaged in financial investment activity.
In order to address the mixed results found in previous studies, using data from the Taiwan Social Change Survey collected in 2012, this study investigates gender differences in financial investment and the mechanisms that account for the differences in financial investment behaviors between genders. The results show that, when other factors are not taken into account, there is no significant difference in the number of financial products between men and women.
Interestingly, when personal educational levels, earned income, and work status are held constant, women report to have more financial products than men. The results suggest that SES is the key mechanism leading to the differences in financial products between men and women.
