With the advancement of science and technology, the development of transportation and Internet, the increase of leisure time and personal income, sightseeing and travel gradually become a common social phenomenon. In the past, travel was a journey for the upper class to learn about classical culture. In modern times, it is a life break. After leaving the familiar relationship and environment, individuals will have more possibilities to show and transform themselves.
However, previous studies rarely distinguished and explored the solo travel of actors in Eastern societies with family and collectivism as the core. Therefore, this study explores the cognition of solo travel, how does solo traveler divide or perpetuate the self between travel and daily life, and the relevance to identity through the preparations and behaviors of solo travelers. Scholar Stein proposed that individuals take a temporary vacation identity while on vacation. Vacationers define and divide experiences that are different from daily life through objects, behaviors, and interactions with travel companions. Vacationers create "new" identities based on malleable and multiple identities of travel. This study will take Stein's discourse as the main theoretical basis, through in-depth interviews, to explore how solo travelers divide their daily lives, shape and express themselves in the absence of familiar others.
This study found that the relationship and demarcation between travel and daily life of solo travelers can be sorted out in three forms, namely, integrating travel into daily life, extracting travel from daily life, and different demarcation modes according to the stages of travel. In addition, the boundary between travel and daily life will also be affected by the meaning and motivation of travel, and will be connected with the experience of travel. Individuals will change their perception and practice of travel because of the experience of travel, which also shows the process of identification is constantly changing. Moreover, according to the content of this research, solo travelers show the identity through the distinction between sightseeing and travel, and distinguish sightseeing and travel through experience of local life, the discovery of authenticity and self-awareness. At the same time, they will orientate themselves differently depending on the purpose of the trip, the presence of companions, and the state of mind.
