Using six-wave panel data to construct the dynamic types of couples’ living choice, this thesis focuses on the generational effect of female movement in Taiwan (measured by year of the marriage). With the relative power perspective, this thesis explores the factors that influence the dynamic types of couples’ choice of residence and their effects on individual life satisfaction.
According to the GMM model, this thesis finds six marital trajectory in the sample. They are “patrilocal residence”, “matrilocal residence”, “living near the patrilocal residence”, “living in the middle”, “variation of patrilocal residence”, and “variation of matrilocal residence”.
The author further explores the effect of these residential types on life satisfaction. The results show that the matrilocal residence is not necessarily a good result for the wife. The wife may not be satisfied with the family life and her marital satisfaction may not be good as well after controlling for the timing of the marriage. However concerning work satisfaction, the 90’s marriage cohort and the matrilocal residence have the best life satisfaction. Husbands of the types of near the patrilocal residence, living in the middle, and the matrilocal residence report less self-rated health than those of the patrilocal residence after controlling for the marriage cohort. Husbands of the types of variation of patrilocal residence and variation of matrilocal residence report less self-rated health than those of the patrilocal residence as well. Apparently, even if gender equality has been improved in Taiwan over years, the influence of traditional values still exists in terms of residential choices for couples.
