- The study aimed to investigate the effects of nationality of the students’ mothers on their academic performance. The interviewees are students from first graders to six graders in an elementary school in New Taipei City with 656 valid samples. Research data were collected through questionnaires and then quantitatively analyzed with descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, one-way analysis of variance, and multiple regression analysis.
The main research findings are as follows:
1. the interviewees’ academic performance on math and Chinese is not significantly different than that of their peers whether the interviewees’ mothers are from China or are minorities. In contrast, the academic performance of the interviewees whose mothers are Vietnamese is significantly different than that of their peers.
2. Also, in terms of performance on Chinese and English, the interviewees whose mothers are Vietnamese perform worse than their peers whose mothers are from China or are minorities.
3. Furthermore, there is no significant correlation between the nationality of the interviewees’ mothers and how their teacher teach them. Neither are the nationality of the interviewees’ mothers and the interviewees’ learning attitude and learning habits significantly correlated. The interviewees’ relationship with their peers and parents does not significantly correlate with the nationality of their mothers, either.
4. Finally, the academic performance of the interviewees is greatly influenced by their fathers’ education background. The higher their fathers’ education level is, the better the interviewee’s academic performance. Besides, their mother’s education background indirectly influence the interviewees’ academic performance. According to the results, the effects of nationality of the interviewees’ mothers on their academic performance may result from the interviewees’ family background. That is, the profession and education of the interviewees’ parents may lead to the differences of the effects of the nationality of the students’ mothers on their academic performance.
In the end, some suggestions are offered to the authorities concerned, elementary school teachers, and following researchers.
