“Tonic”
is one of characteristic of food culture in Taiwan. It originated in bad
quality of life and lack of nutrition, therefore people tonic in specific
festival for nutrition. However, along with economic development in
Taiwan, modern Taiwanese on nutritional requirements change from
malnutrition to nutritional imbalance and overnutrition. Many doctors and
experts say that we need to eat less oil, less salt and less affordable
food. It makes tonic embarrass. However, we can still see that the tonic
store like mutton hot pot or ginger duck shop with Chinese herb filled
with visitors. We want to discuss the concept of change and confliction.
We use interview and news analysis to cross analysis. To compare with the
results of the fieldwork and large amounts of data, the result will be
more reliable. We find tonic still has a pivotal position in Taiwan. Just
by the impact of western medicine make confusing in Taiwanese medical
concept of tonic and contradictory attitude. Another discovery is the
tonic trend toward to entertainment, leisure and pluralism.
