  • Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between experience of abuse in childhood/adolescence and parental rearing attitudes in adulthood, using data from the second wave of the fourth edition of Taiwan Social Change Survey (TSCS) collected in the year of 2001. This study is based on the theories of risk factors of child abuse and intergenerational transmission of domestic violence. The independent variables considered include personal background, experience of abuse in childhood/adolescence, and the protective factors of resilience. The study explores the relationship between experience of abuse in childhood/adolescence and parental rearing attitudes in adulthood, further using the resulting data to analyze contemporary social phenomena.

The results show that personal background (including experience of abuse in childhood/adolescence) and the protective factors of resilience both significantly affect views on child abuse and parenting methods. Furthermore, the study finds that personal experience of being abused indeed affects parenting values and methods after the abused children grow up. The more severe the abuse during childhood, the more strict the subjects parenting skills and technique turn out to be. When protective factors of resilience are taken into account, the relative influence of childhood abuse seem to decrease greatly. This study can be used as reference for individuals, families and policy making of governments.
