Abstract
The primary purpose of this research attempts to explore factors affecting
adaptation to school life in elementary schoolchildren of foreign spouses. The
research sample came from the survey of “Learning and Life Intention of the
Elementary Schoolchildren of foreign spouses”, which was conducted by the
Statistics Department, the Ministry of Education of Republic of China in 2005. The original sample covered the whole Taiwan-Fujian Area, including Jinmen and
Lianjiang counties. In order to satisfy the research purpose, however, the total final number used in this project to test adaptation to school life in elementary
schoolchildren of foreign spouses is 6941 cases.
After reviewing literature and meeting the research purpose, three hypotheses are presented in the project: (1) Personal and family background of the elementary schoolchildren of foreign spouses significantly affect their schoolwork assistance from their parents. (2) Personal and family background of the elementary schoolchildren of foreign spouses affect their academic performance through schoolwork assistance from their parents. (3) Personal and family background of the elementary schoolchildren of foreign spouses influence their adaptation to school life through both schoolwork assistance from their parents and their academic performance.
Through statistical analysis, the research finds conclusions as follows: the above three hypotheses have significantly been supported. General speaking, personal and family background of the elementary schoolchildren of foreign spouses affect their schoolwork assistance from their parents; their schoolwork assistance from their parents influence their academic performance; and, furthermore, their academic performance influence their adaptation to school life.
In addition, the results of this analysis also reveal several interesting findings in gender, grade, cognitive ability and language development, education and Chinese language proficiency, and economic status. The findings show that the elementary school female students of foreign spouses received less schoolwork assistance from their parents comparing to male students, but they are a higher performance in both their academic achievement and their adaptation to school life. With the rise of grades in elementary schoolchildren of foreign spouses, their schoolwork assistance from their parents and their academic achievement decline. Cognitive ability and language development of elementary schoolchildren of foreign spouses significantly affect their academic performance as well as their adaptation to school life. Although Education and Chinese language proficiency of foreign spouses influence their children’s academic achievement and adaptation to school life, however these two
variables are not primary factors. Finally, for elementary schoolchildren of foreign spouses, schoolwork assistance from their parents, their academic performance, and their adaptation to school life are reduced as their family economic status decreases.
