  • Abstract

The transformation of labor market condition in recent decades has affected Taiwan’s labor force participation from the start of industrialization in the 1960s, the shift of agriculture to manufacturing industries in the mid 1970s, to the economic growth instigated by the service and finance industries in 1980s and 1990s. However, transformation of global economy has changed the domestic industry structure and manufacturing processes, resulting in the movement of labor intensive industry towards low-wage oversea markets and outward shift of industry and labor demands. These changes further cause the economic recession in Taiwan, accompanied by rapid increase in close down of businesses and industries. As a result, employment opportunities are greatly reduced and unemployment issues arise due to the inability of the labor market to release labor force.

Unemployment can cause reduction in income or layoffs in employees. Thus, social factors extend influence on the financial condition of families and indirectly put pressure in people’s marriage and family life. This research used the Second-Wave Study on Social Problem of the 2001 Taiwan Social Change Survey collected by Academia Sinica to examine the relationship between employment status, marriage satisfaction, and family life satisfaction.

Research shows that financial difficulties due to employment status have a significant impact on marriage and family life satisfaction. For the unemployed, there is a negative correlation between marriage satisfaction and family satisfaction, with family conflicts and disputes further deteriorate family relationships prominently. Consequently, financial difficulties directly affect one’s family life.
