Using the survey of “Learning and Life Intention of the Elementary School Children of Foreign Spouses”, which is conducted by the Statistics Department, the Ministry of Education of Republic of China in 2005 with a totally 6943 effective sample, this paper attempts to study factors that influence academic achievement of children of foreign spouses.
In this study, the questionnaire data are categorized to three different groups such as independent variables, intervening variables, and dependent variables. First, the independent variables include cognitive language development, gender, school grade, number of siblings, birth order, nationality of foreign parents, communicative ability of foreign parents, cultural capital, financial capital, and degree of urbanization. Second, the intervening variables contain time for study and social capital. Third, the dependent variables refer to academic achievement.
The study tries to investigate the correlation between the academic achievement of children of foreign spouses and factors including those children’s personal background, family background, and ecological factors, combining theories of social capital, financial capital, as well as cultural capital. Furthermore, the study analyzes whether each background factor can obtain academic achievement through social capital and time for study. Through the quantitative regression analysis and the path analysis, it is found that female children with normal cognitive development, top-ranked birth order, and in their earlier school grades have better academic performance.
The results are also consistent with social capital, financial capital and cultural capital theories. However, the results based on the Resource Dilution Theory and Lareau's Home Advantage, and ecological factors for studying the academic achievement of children of foreign spouses are different from the other previous scholars research. The paper also finds that the background factors can earn academic achievement through social capital and time for study. Reasons for explanation and discussion are also discussed.
