Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Sociology

Quantitative Methods

Department of Sociology, National Taipei University

I. About the Department

Research-methods training has long been an important part of the sociology curriculum at National Taipei University. Our students receive training in social statistics, research methods, and hands-on empirical research, with an emphasis on developing sociological questions, collecting and analyzing evidence, and conducting independent research.

We are seeking a colleague who can strengthen this existing tradition, particularly in quantitative methods and data analysis. This may include conventional statistical methods, demographic methods, survey research, longitudinal or large-scale secondary data analysis, as well as computational and other emerging forms of quantitative research. Our goal is not to recruit for one narrowly defined methodological specialty, but to expand the range and depth of quantitative training available to our students.

The Department values a collegial working environment. Faculty regularly exchange ideas about research and teaching and work together in advising students and developing the Department. We are looking not simply to fill a methodological need, but for a colleague who will bring their own substantive research interests while contributing to the Department’s broader intellectual community.

II. Qualifications

Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

1. Hold a Ph.D. in sociology or a related field from a university in Taiwan or abroad. Applicants who are completing their doctoral degree may apply if they can provide documentation indicating that the degree will be conferred before the appointment begins.

2. Demonstrate research expertise and teaching competence in quantitative research methods, and be able to teach required and/or elective courses in quantitative methods offered by the Department.

3. Have at least one scholarly article employing quantitative research methods that has been published, formally accepted for publication, or has received a formal revise-and-resubmit (R&R) decision from an academic journal. The applicant must be the first author or corresponding author. For work not yet published, applicants must provide an acceptance letter, R&R status letter, or other appropriate documentation from the journal.

4. Be able to teach at least one substantive sociology course included in the Department’s curriculum, based on the applicant’s area of expertise.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications above, preference will be given to applicants who meet at least one of the following criteria. These qualifications are preferred but not required:

1. Research expertise in quantitative sociology or a related field.

2. Prior experience teaching quantitative research methods, statistics, data analysis, or related courses, or the ability to present a clear and well-developed plan for such courses.

3. Concrete ideas or prior experience concerning the appropriate use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in teaching, research training, student learning, or community-engaged practice; alternatively, a willingness to incorporate AI tools appropriately into teaching, research training, student collaboration, or community-engaged practice, with appropriate attention to academic integrity, data security, and student learning outcomes.

III. Required Documents and Publications:

1. Curriculum vitae (please specify primary research expertise and proposed plans for core and elective courses to be taught in the future) and a list of academic publications.

2. Representative academic publications (if the applicant obtained a Ph.D. within the past three years, please submit the doctoral dissertation).

3. Two letters of recommendation.

4. A copy of the Ph.D. degree certificate, as well as transcripts from master’s and Ph.D. programs.

5. Other relevant supporting documents (e.g., records of research projects led, teaching evaluation records, etc.).

• [Exemption Clause]: Applicants who already hold a valid teaching certificate at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher issued by the Ministry of Education are exempt from submitting letters of recommendation and master’s and doctoral transcripts.

• [Important Notes]: Please retain copies of all application materials, as the Department will not return them after review.

V. Promotion, Evaluation, and Tenure System

Participation in Evaluations: Full-time faculty members must participate in the university’s periodic evaluations, which are conducted every two years.

Time-Limited Promotion Requirements: In accordance with National Taipei  University’s faculty appointment regulations, newly appointed full-time assistant professors are generally required to be promoted to associate professor within six years of taking up their position (in certain circumstances or for special reasons, an extension to eight years may be requested).

Diverse Promotion Pathways: In addition to the traditional “promotion based on academic publications,” National Taipei University has in recent years actively promoted “promotion based on teaching practice research” and “promotion based on industry-academia collaboration achievements” in accordance with the Ministry of Education’s policies, providing more diverse career development opportunities for faculty members with different strengths.
