Existing research largely focuses on the hardships and welfare needs faced by divorced or single-mother women. However, there remains a lack of in-depth exploration regarding how these women gradually rebuild their economic autonomy through social support systems—such as family, friends, government agencies, and civil society organizations—and the specific roles and influence these systems exert during the rebuilding process. Therefore, this study aims to investigate how divorced women rebuild their lives while establishing economic autonomy and, in the process, cultivate self-reliance. The specific research objectives are as follows:
1. To understand the primary challenges divorced women face during the process of rebuilding economic autonomy and the underlying causes of these challenges.
2. To analyze how various personal background factors influence their rebuilding strategies and the overall process.
3. To examine the roles, operational mechanisms, and limitations of social support within the rebuilding process.
4. To explore how divorced women reshape their self-identity and reconstruct a sense of meaning in their lives during this rebuilding process.
This study focuses primarily on divorced women, recruiting participants via questionnaires and prioritizing those with experience in child-rearing or family caregiving. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews, utilizing flexible, open-ended questions that allowed participants to describe their perspectives and feelings based on their personal experiences. The interview framework centered on three key aspects:(1) the actual division of household chores and caregiving responsibilities during the marriage; (2) the impact of career and domestic labor on life before and after divorce; and (3) the process of self-reconstruction following divorce—including role redefinition, the pursuit of financial independence, and adjustments to lifestyle strategies—as well as available sources of social support (e.g., family, friends, the workplace, and social welfare systems). This interview design provides a detailed picture of how women managed the division between employment and housework during marriage, and how social support strategies influenced their post-divorce self-reconstruction and the rebuilding of financial autonomy.
The findings indicate that the interaction between an individual's internal capabilities and external support systems is crucial to the reconstruction process. The process cannot be attributed to a single factor; rather, it results from the interplay between internal autonomy and external social support. When individuals possess self-reflective capabilities, a solid financial foundation, and a stable social support network, their recovery and potential for continued personal growth are significantly enhanced.
