This study examines articles related to sports published in the Taiwanese women's fashion magazine Bella from 1984 to 2018 to explore the dominant narratives in Taiwanese women's magazines' portrayal of women's sports, and whether these narratives have changed over time. The study employs a two-stage textual analysis framework. The first stage involves a macro-level analysis of the titles of 281 articles, while the second stage involves a micro-level analysis of the content of 43 articles selected from the first stage's sample.
The analysis reveals that the magazine's portrayal of the ideal female body is not simply about beauty or health, but rather two rhetorical systems that are differentiated and interwoven at the textual level. The titles highly focus on visually appealing, result-oriented aesthetic vocabulary, while the entire text simultaneously weaves together health and aesthetic arguments to persuade the reader. The terms "weight loss" and "slimming" show generational shifts, indicating that the substantive content guiding readers towards body transformation has not diminished but has become more subtle through neutral terminology. The three elements of the sculpting narrative—"lines," "sculpting," and "firmness"—exploded in frequency almost simultaneously between 2001 and 2010.
The ideal female body has evolved from eliminating fat and losing weight to sculpting beautiful muscle lines, and then to a more defined, firm, and elastic "honey body." This symbolizes a shift in the female ideal body from numerical anxiety about "weight" to a qualitative pursuit centered on "body shape," and ultimately, a self-practice of mind-body integration under the vision of "pursuing one's most beautiful self." The evolution of the discourse on female muscle from "avoidance" to "no need to worry" and then to "moderate control" reflects that gender boundaries have not disappeared under scientific explanation.
