With the rapid development of digital technology, internet and social media have profoundly transformed interpersonal interactions and social life. University students are at a critical stage of transitioning from adolescence to adulthood, during which the formation and maintenance of friendships become important developmental tasks. In this process, communication applications and social media platforms have gradually become important tools for social interaction and relationship, resulting in social networks characterized by the integration of online and offline interactions. However, whether the convenience brought by digital technology enhances social connectedness or instead intensifies feelings of loneliness and social pressure remains an important issue for investigation.
This study adopts a qualitative research approach and collects data through in-depth interviews and participant observation. The research was conducted at a university of science and technology in northern Taiwan. A total of eleven full-time undergraduate students participated in the study, including five males and six females. To enhance the diversity and representativeness of the data, participants were selected from different majors, living arrangements, and part-time employment statuses.
The purpose of this study is to examine how communication applications and social media platforms influence university students’ interpersonal networks, social connectedness, and experiences of loneliness, and to explore how they negotiate interpersonal relationships and self-perceptions between online and offline environments.
The findings indicate that university students’ social lives are characterized by the integration of online and offline interactions, while interpersonal relationships remain primarily grounded in face-to-face communication. Social media and communication applications mainly function as tools for maintaining and extending existing relationships rather than replacing direct interpersonal interaction. Although digital platforms enhance the convenience and immediacy of communication, participants still tend to seek emotional support and develop intimate relationships through in-person contact or real-time interactions. The findings suggest that while digital technology has transformed the forms of interpersonal interaction, it has not replaced the central role of face-to-face interaction in maintaining interpersonal relationships and providing emotional support.
