With the widespread use of smartphones and the Internet, adolescents’ daily lives have been profoundly influenced by digital technologies. Many adolescents experience problems such as social deprivation, insufficient sleep, distraction, and addiction, among which Internet addiction has become an important factor affecting adolescent mental health. In this context, how parents guide, regulate, and participate in their children’s Internet use, namely, digital parenting, has become a key factor in adolescents’ social and psychological development. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effects of parental digital parenting styles on adolescent depressive symptoms and to investigate the mediating role of Internet addiction.

This study used data from the first and second waves of the Taiwan Internet Generation and Parenting Study (TIGPS). Adolescents’ perceptions of parental digital parenting were used as the independent variable, and latent profile analysis was conducted to identify distinct digital parenting styles. Regression analysis and causal mediation analysis were subsequently employed to examine the mediating effect of Internet addiction on the relationship between digital parenting styles and adolescent depressive symptoms.

The latent profile analysis identified five distinct digital parenting styles. Significant differences were found across parenting styles in both Internet addiction and depressive symptoms. Overall, adolescents in the low-pressure companionship group demonstrated more favorable outcomes, whereas those in the strict regulation group showed relatively less favorable outcomes. Furthermore, the causal mediation analysis indicated that Internet addiction partially mediated the relationship between digital parenting styles and depressive symptoms, with approximately 30% to 40% of the total effect being explained by the mediating pathway. These findings suggest that parental digital parenting not only has a direct effect on adolescent depressive symptoms but also indirectly affects depressive symptoms by influencing adolescents’ Internet addiction.

Overall, this study demonstrates that digital parenting is not a unidimensional parenting strategy characterized solely by control, permissiveness, or support. Rather, different dimensions of parenting interact and combine to form diverse digital parenting styles. Appropriate support and companionship may help reduce the risks of Internet addiction and depressive symptoms, whereas excessive control, restriction, or neglect may have negative consequences.
