Taiwanese adolescents are growing up as digital natives, navigating peer relationships across both physical and virtual environments. This study examines how digital parenting and the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) are associated with adolescent depression, and how these two forces relate to each other. Using the second wave of the Taiwan i-Generation Panel Study (TIGPS; SRDA D00268), this study analyses a complete-case sample of 7,120 eighth-grade students. Depression was measured with a 10-item CESD-R-derived scale. Drawing on parental mediation theory and Barber’s (1996) concept of psychological control, culturally contextualised by Chao’s (1994) concept of guan, exploratory factor analysis identified three dimensions of digital parenting: active/evaluative, restrictive/regulatory, and coercive/conflictual, estimated separately for mothers and fathers. Hierarchical regression and moderation analysis were employed. Three findings stand out. First, FoMO was a robust positive correlate of depression across all model specifications. Second, coercive/conflictual digital parenting operated in three distinct ways: as an independent correlate of depression, as the strongest digital parenting correlate of FoMO, and as a moderator that amplified the FoMO-depression association. Third, digital parenting was more closely tied to FoMO than to depression. Because the design is cross-sectional, these patterns are interpreted as associations rather than causal pathways. The findings position coercive digital parenting as a distinct relational stressor in adolescents’ digital lives and situate FoMO as a proximal digital social correlate of depression.
