For Hong Kong people who are living in Taiwan, they can go back to Hong Kong anytime, but it may also be a hometown that is not easy to go back in the short time. This research will examine how Hong Kong people who lived in Taiwan permanently and those who are temporarily living in Taiwan construct the identity of “Hong Kong people” in their daily life, consumption behavior and social life and explore whether there are differences between diaspora and non-diaspora through in-depth interviews.
There was a total of 20 respondents in this research. Including 12 are diaspora and 8 are non-diaspora. Their nostalgia is aroused by discomfort when they came to Taiwan at the beginning. Also, their nostalgia is also about family relationships, foods and Cantonese language. On the other hand, they miss the glorious time which they think in the past of Hong Kong.
Although they are living in Taiwan, they unintentionally speak with a Cantonese accent and keep a fast pace while they are walking. At the same time, watching Hong Kong movies, listening to Hong Kong music, going to Hong Kong restaurants and build up a social network of Hong Kong immigrants in Taiwan. Also, there are many objects they brought form Hong Kong too. Those are the ways they construct the identity as a “Hong Konger” and relief the nostalgia of their hometown-Hong Kong. It is the way to yearn for the past too. Finally, there are no significate differences in the practicing of nostalgia between diaspora and non-diaspora. However, it shows that the identity of diaspora is blurring since they moved to Taiwan.
