In recent years, sleep health and mental health have become widely discussed topics and are regarded as important public health issues. This study takes a sociological approach by examining their associations across from the adolescence to early adulthood. Past research on the relationship between sleep problems and emotions has predominantly relied on cross-sectional data, limiting the understanding of their long-term dynamics. Even studies utilizing longitudinal data often yield inconsistent results, with most focusing solely on the short-term effects during adolescence, while neglecting the long-term changes across the life cycle. This study analyzes eight waves of longitudinal data from the Taiwan Youth Project, covering the period from adolescence to early adulthood. By adopting a life course perspective and employing a random intercept cross-lagged panel model (RI-CLPM), we distinguish between interindividual and intraindividual effects to elucidate the long-term relationships between sleep problems, positive affect, and negative affect as they evolve over time.

The results indicate that, at the between-person level, there are stable associations between sleep problems, positive affect, and negative affect. At the within-person level, sleep problems and negative affect exhibit significant stable continuity, although this effect weakens and eventually disappears during the transition from adolescence to early adulthood. Positive affect, on the other hand, demonstrates significant stable continuity only during early adolescence. The cross-lagged effects reveal that the long-term relationship between sleep problems and emotions tends to be predominantly driven by "sleep problems affecting emotions." However, these long-term relationships are also influenced by "life cycle stress" where specific life stages or contexts (such as during academic transitions or the transition from adolescence to early adulthood) can lead to a shift in the relationship, with "emotions affecting sleep problems." Additionally, these effects are primarily driven by sleep problems and negative affect, rather than positive affect.
