  • Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to explore factors affecting public morality display of senior and vocational school students. Data come from fourth wave of new study samples of senior and vocational high school students and student-parent questionnaire data (limited use vision) of Taiwan Education Panel Survey (referred as the TEPS). The paper uses the personal background of students and parents as independent variables, social capital as an intervening variable, and senior and vocational school students’ public morality behavior as the dependent variable.

For literature review and research purposes, the following three assumptions are presented:

Firstly, different personal background variables of senior and vocational school students have significant impact on ethical behavior.

Secondly, different family background variables of senior and vocational school students have significant impact on ethical behavior.

Finally, different personal background variables and family background variables of senior and vocational school students, through the intermediary of social capital variables, affect the display of public morality.

Through regression analysis, results support the above three assumptions to some extent for this study: different background variables will affect the behavior of senior and vocational school students and their adherence to public morality. In addition, social capital is an intervening variable that affects the behavior of senior and vocational school students, as it influences one’s moral and ethical standards.

In all, the research results found that “parents’ civic virtue”, “social capital within school”, “mother of sources of social capital within family”, and “other family members of source of social capital within family” had the greatest impacts on ethical behavior. With senior and vocational school students, healthy relationships with “significant others”, positive family values, supportive peers and constructive teacher-student interaction contributed to a model for learning and the forming of strong ethical behavior of senior and vocational school students.
