  • Abstract

Language is a cumulative record of culture, and class is a changing social structure, the two may be causality for each other or result in some restrictions. For those self-confessed language fluency, the factors of such subjective social and psychological state of self-confidence value must be digged out through the long-term change study on the social class and historical political form, thereby to explore the more specific interpretation of its relevance, and to survey the self-confidence source formation of social development factors.

Due to special political, historical factors and community structures, the use of language becomes diverse, Taiwan exhibits a multilingual society. In a multilingual society, the status of each language is often not the same, the language fluency assessment of Taiwan people themselves is considered to be influenced by class factors (subjective and objective), and each of four common languages (Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hakka, English) shows a different appearance. Taiwan's political history must deeply be studied to explore the impact of the class effect, herein class factors and language fluency self assessment are reviewed to find what is the impact. To start with age, gender, personal income, personal and parental education level, parent group, and group population proportion, which are viewed as objective class variables, the different language fluency level affected by objective class conditions is observed to see whether a different kind of state will happen or not. In addition to the objective class-oriented aspect, the impacts of a subjective class self-assessment and a self-identified language fluency level are checked. Besides, by adding intermediary social and cultural factors (interventing variables), a preliminary description is attempted to describe the confidence factors of Taiwanese considering themselves fluency in the language.
